SIX PAINTINGS IN TWO DAYS CHANGED MY ART PROCESS FOREVER.
I SURPRISED MYSELF.
I did not expect to achieve the results I got in the time that it took.
This is a story of how creating six paintings in two days changed my art process forever.
I love living off-grid. I would never want to move to the city.
It is one of the things that fuels my art. There's so much inspiration. It completely charges my creative eye no matter where I look.
The only problem is how challenging this lifestyle can be to find the space to create art.
I had a project coming up to make several cards for a shop.
This opportunity excited me.Â
I had a chance to get my ideas around nature and the dynamism of the wilds in front of regular people.
So, unfortunately, it was frustrating that I started to face delays.
Delays are nothing new.
I have to gather and chop wood, keep the cabin toasty, carry water and all sorts of other things.
Even hike 15 minutes to get to my car, if I'm carrying stuff or picking up supplies.
All that makes it super difficult to find the time to create.
I have been refining my process for a long time now.
My main goal is simplification and speed.
Because I still want to work during the winter.
I would love to communicate the wildness of winter. The fact that everything dies off to then be reborn again in the spring.Â
I find that fascinating to watch.
So I had this project and I knew I had to get it out as soon possible.
I decided to do it all in a batch.Â
Something I've never done before.
But it forced me to simplify and speed up, which is my goal.
This way of working destroyed perfectionism, which usually gets in my way.
So the first day I did all the drawings.
I put six pieces of paper on my table and I drew each painting, one by one.
The lines poured out of me like spilt spaghetti.
It was an cascade coming from the spirit of this land, and all the different creatures I share it with.
As I drew I wanted the marks to shine through the painting. To communicate world upon world within the landscape.
It doesn't matter where I look. There's so much life and I wanted that to come through the marks.
I worked to bridge the gap between opposite. Making the drawing a conduit between figurative and abstraction. Illustration and realism. Each image had to connect.
Day two I hit the watercolours.
I picked specific colours, without changing the pallet for individual paintings.
I worked for cohesion, unity. I wanted this to be a series.
It was like the inspiration saturated every single cell in my body. I could feel the entire forest surging through my spine like lightening.
It felt natural and intuitive.
This series, these six paintings in two days, broke my art process open in the best way possible.
It was the final emergence of what I'd been seeking to do since I started.
I'm so pleased with the result. I wanted these paintings to get out into the world as soon as possible.
Yes, they were going in a shop but I thought to myself, "why don't I give some away for free?"
So I decided to give the first 100 limited edition prints out to anyone who wants them.
I am going to do that every time I make a series now.Â
The result warmed my heart. People loved them. They adored the energy, the dynamism, and the tender beauty.
They loved the connection to the spirit of nature. Which is exactly what I aimed to communicate.
Every review I got was joyous. Everyone is so happy about their print.
So this is a direction that has changed my art process for good.
It enabled me to communicate that natural beauty.
I can share the connection of life out here in a quick, powerful and profound way.
