EXPLORE THE ARTWORK

Watercolour number 1 Autumn 25 series is a vibrant watercolour painting. The piece has a combination of hot reds, yellows, and cool greens and blues. It's a sunny piece, perfect for warmer coloured wall spaces.

Part of a series of six paintings, this is the first piece in the series. The painting is of a heron. This primordial bird painting shows the heron basking in the warm sunshine. The light and temperature give the piece a nice soothing glow.

The painting style is illustrative, abstract, and naive realism. There is dynamism in the marks. You can see the pencil through the brush strokes. Dashes of black and white ink give the piece a movement that brings the bird alive.

The final original painting has a natural wax medium finish. The glaze gives the piece beautiful depth and a natural shine. I mounted the artwork on acid-free, archival mount board.

This watercolour is ready to hang on your wall. This painting comes with a magnetic float mount, and is so light, you'll find it easy to place it where you want it.

WATERCOLOUR NUMBER ONE, AUTUMN 25 SERIES, IS ABOUT ALERTNESS.

The painting shows a heron basking in the warm glow of the rising sun.

I find herons incredible. They are an ancient, primordial bird. They fascinate me and captivate my attention whenever I see them.

They display a poise, elegance, and patience that many humans have lost.

It is difficult to maintain a disposition of patience in a world that is so full of distractions.

The almost constant bombardment of advertisements or bad news can put anyone on edge. Media of most kinds make it hard to maintain a peaceful inner landscape. The desire to check your phone, for example. Or the news. There is no relief there. Only agitation.

So when I look at a heron, I am inspired.

The bird's elegant, restful, patient stalking of fish. I see them maintaining complete static stillness. A patience unwavering whilst watching fish approach.

The rivers at the bottom of the valley where I am give herons the perfect hunting grounds.

Herons teach me to have honest patience. Not a patience coming from forced compliance or expectation.

It is a natural trust in oneself.

Heron's teach me that I have to have patience with the seasons if I want to catch the fish. Fish can be a metaphor for food, water, or wood.

Whatever survival task is ahead of me, I have to be patient. I must relax my mind and stay focused. Distraction and frustration lead to death out here.

I have to trust in myself, rather than fear, frustration, or any distraction.

It takes a lot of patience and problem-solving. Heron's in particular teach me that.

The way I painted Watercolour 1 Autumn 25 Series was a multi-layered approach. I wanted to blend the abstract with the figurative to bring out the spirit of the animal.

Patience is knowing that whatever happens, you can rely on yourself. That is what this painting is about.
